Carnation, King County
Fitting a chimney cap in Carnation costs $235 to $850. The lower figure buys a stock stainless cap over one flue. A cap that spans several flues, or one made to measure for an odd crown, is the higher one. We measure on your roof before ordering anything.

No other chimney part costs so little while shielding so much. In its September 2026 heating-safety release, the State Fire Marshal's office lists a chimney cap among its basic recommendations for homes with a fireplace. Carnation gives a cap plenty to do. WeatherSpark's land-cover summary has trees on some 54% of everything inside a two-mile radius, cropland on a further 26%, so needles, leaves and nesting birds are never far from a flue.
Two rivers meet at Carnation, the Tolt and the Snoqualmie River, and the town grew up on that junction after being platted as Tolt in 1902. The city monitors a gauge on each river and publishes guidance for residents when levels rise.
River bottoms are rich habitat. Starlings, swifts and squirrels treat an uncapped flue as a hollow tree, and raccoons will climb down one to den on the smoke shelf. A stainless cap with a mesh skirt closes that door. If we find a nest during the visit, it comes out before the cap goes on, and we tell you if the flue needs brushing afterward.
Every chimney cap installation we do in Carnation includes:
Smoke coming back into the room, or a smell that won't go? Book the inspection first.
Book nowWithout a cap, rain falls straight down the flue. It rusts the damper, soaks the smoke shelf and, in a masonry chimney, works into the mortar from the inside. Animals are the second problem: an open flue is a dry cavity in a wet landscape. Sparks are the third: the mesh skirt we fit is fine enough to hold embers back and open enough to leave the draft alone.
November in Carnation averages close to 9.8 inches of rain, WeatherSpark calculates, falling on about 18 of its 30 days. Wind picks up at the same time: the windier half of the year opens around October 21, December is the breeziest month, and from early December to late February the air moves mostly out of the east.
Rain that arrives on a slant gets under a flat, shallow lid. For that reason we choose caps with a deep skirt and enough overhang, and we fasten them for wind from more than one quarter. Region-wide, the Western Regional Climate Center adds, late-fall and winter gales tend to arrive out of the south or southwest, so a Carnation cap has to hold against both directions.
Flue tiles are rarely a standard size on an older stack. We record length, width and height above the crown, and note whether the crown can hold a fastener.
Single-flue, multi-flue or made to order. Stainless is our default because painted steel does not last through many valley winters.
Clamp screws on a sound tile, masonry anchors and sealant on the crown for a full-coverage cap. Each fastener is checked by hand.
With the cap on, we check from below that the damper moves and that no debris fell during the work.

Between $235 and $850 fitted. Flue count, crown dimensions and stock-versus-custom fabrication explain the spread.
A correctly sized cap leaves more open area than the flue itself. Draft trouble after capping usually means the mesh has clogged with soot, which a sweep clears.
A gas appliance vented through a masonry flue still needs rain and animals kept out. Direct-vent units have their own termination and take the manufacturer's part, not a generic cap.
