Carnation, King County
Sweeping a chimney in Carnation is a $189 to $449 job. One straight flue under an easy roof sits at the bottom of that bracket; a steep pitch or a tall stack moves the job up the bracket. Every sweep ends with a basic visual check of the firebox, damper and flue, and you get photos of what we found.

Carnation is small: the Census counts 768 housing units, and about 88% of them are detached single-family houses. About one occupied home in two heats chiefly with electricity; for 44.5% the main fuel is utility gas. Wood is the main fuel for only a handful of households, a count whose margin of error is as large as the count. So most fires here are lit for comfort on a cold evening, in a fireplace or stove that sits idle for weeks at a time.
The Tolt River empties into the Snoqualmie River at Carnation, and the city itself tracks a gauge on each: one 1.3 miles northwest of town, the other 5.5 miles northeast on the Tolt. Its flood page explains that winter high water follows heavy precipitation, while spring floods come from snowmelt with rain on top.
For a sweep, that matters in a plain way. Cordwood stacked on low ground through a soggy winter never seasons, and damp fuel is what coats a flue with tarry deposits. If your woodpile or the ash cleanout door has been near standing water, say so when you book. We will open the cleanout and look at the base of the flue for silt and rust before any brush goes in.
Every chimney sweep we do in Carnation includes:
Smoke coming back into the room, or a smell that won't go? Book the inspection first.
Book nowAn occasional fire is exactly how a flue gets neglected. NFPA 211, in the passage CSIA reproduces for homeowners, asks that every chimney be examined yearly, and CSIA itself recommends brushing a masonry fireplace once soot reaches an eighth of an inch, sooner if any of it has turned glossy. For 2024, Washington's State Fire Marshal traced 77% of residential heating fires to a chimney or flue, a figure released in September 2026. The Department of Ecology's advice on fuel is simple: split it, cover it and stack it for at least a year before it goes in the stove.
WeatherSpark dates Carnation's wetter season from about October 7 until May 17, some 7.3 months, and names November the wettest month at about 9.8 inches of rain spread over some 18 wet days. July, the driest, gets about an inch.
Late summer and early fall bring another kind of damp: fog or low cloud that, by WRCC's description of western Washington, can fill the lower valleys until noon. Soot left in a flue through that damp stretch soaks up moisture and starts to smell. Brushing during the dry weeks before October means the season's first fire is lit over bare, dry tile or steel.
Tarps cover the path between entry and hearth, the fireplace opening is sealed around the vacuum hose, and nothing in the room is moved without asking you first.
Depending on roof pitch and weather we work from the top or from the firebox. Brush head and rod stiffness are chosen for the liner, so clay tile is not chipped and steel is not scratched.
Everything the brushes loosen lands on the smoke shelf. We scoop it, vacuum the shelf and damper, then clean the firebox walls and floor.
You see the after photos on the spot. If the camera shows a cracked tile, a gap or glazed deposits, we say so and explain what a follow-up visit would involve.

$189 to $449. Height, roof pitch and how the flue is reached decide where a job falls. A second flue on the same visit is priced on site.
Late summer is easiest. The roof is safe to walk, and brushing is finished ahead of October's rain.
The annual check in NFPA 211 is about condition, not only soot. Birds, a rusted damper or a cracked tile do not depend on how often you light a fire. If the flue turns out clean, we tell you and skip the brushing.
