Rain sets the burning calendar in east King County. Washington also regulates what comes out of the top. Smoke leaving a chimney has to stay at or below 20 percent opacity; six minutes in a row above that mark, within any hour, breaks the rule. Seasoned dry firewood and manufactured logs are the only things the state lets you burn. A clean flue under a hot, dry-wood fire is the easiest way to stay inside both limits.
