Gas is the everyday fuel in much of our area. The Census estimates that 72.1% of occupied homes in Sammamish heat mainly with utility gas, 60.0% in Duvall, 44.5% in Carnation and 38.3% in Redmond. Those numbers describe the main heating system, not fireplaces, yet they say a good deal about what is piped into the houses we visit. A gas fireplace asks less of its owner than a wood one, and that is the trap: years go by without anyone checking it. Our service covers the firebox, the gas train and the vent in one visit, with a carbon monoxide reading at the end.
On the unincorporated land east of Redmond, around Union Hill and Novelty Hill, the Census finds a housing stock with a median build year of 2002 where 68.2% of occupied homes heat with utility gas. Yes. NFPA 211 puts vents on the same yearly inspection schedule as chimneys, and a gas unit's small parts drift out of adjustment gradually. Early fall, before the first cold week, is the convenient time.
