Brick came late to Redmond. The city's 2005 historic resources survey records that early businesses occupied wood-frame buildings with false fronts, that the Redmond Trading Company building of 1908 was the first brick masonry structure in town, and that a two-story brick building replaced Bill Brown's saloon in 1913. Houses older than 1940 are scarce today: the Census estimates 574, about 1.6% of the housing stock.
The 2005 survey frames 1946 to 1980 as Redmond's period of post-war suburbanization and annexation. In Census terms, roughly one housing unit in four here predates 1980 (25.9%), against 45.5% across King County.
For masonry that means a specific kind of job.
