Relining is mostly a question of age and of what has been connected to the chimney over the years. The Census estimates that about 25.9% of Redmond's housing units were built before 1980, and only about 2.5% before 1960. The candidates for a new liner are concentrated in that 1960s and 1970s slice, where clay tiles have carried decades of heat cycles and where inserts were often added later.
The city's 2005 historic resources survey names a 'Post-war Suburbanization and Annexation' period running from 1946 to 1980. It counts more than 40 annexations through the 1950s and 1960s, which multiplied Redmond's acreage more than tenfold. The Census still shows that era in the housing stock: roughly 23.4% of today's units date from 1960 to 1979.

Under Washington's 2021 residential code, a factory-built chimney on a solid-fuel appliance in a dwelling has to be a UL 103 Type HT product, and a factory-built fireplace has to go in the way its listing says.
