Under the 2021 Washington State Residential Code (R1003.9), a chimney must extend at least 2 feet higher than any part of a building within 10 feet and at least 3 feet above the highest point where it passes through the roof. Masonry chimneys need a sloped concrete, metal or stone cap with a drip edge and a caulked bond break around flue liners (R1003.9.1, ASTM C1283).
